On Wednesday, two drivers, the Lecanto resident Mary Virginia Razzano, 84, and the Beverly Hills resident Julie Ann Russell, 52, were involved in an auto accident close to the entrance of the Roger Weaver Educational Complex, right where County Road 491 and Kevin Lane intersect.
According to a statement released by the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 7:48 a.m. Razzano was driving eastbound along West Kevin Lane in a 2005 Hyundai Tucson when she approached the intersection with C.R. 491. Russell, driving a 2012 Dodge Avenger, was heading towards the same intersection, driving in C.R. 491’s southbound inside lane. The report also states that a third driver, as yet unnamed, was also driving along C.R. 491, in the outside lane, and stopped when she saw Razzano, allowing her to make the left-hand turn from Kevin Lane to northbound C.R. 491.
Because the intersection has no light, and only a stop sign along Kevin Lane, it makes this particular junction difficult to navigate. Razzano drove through the Kevin Lane stop sign just as Russell was passing through the intersection. Razzano’s Tucson subsequently made a head-on collision with the right side of Russell’s Avenger. Before the cars collided, it is reported that driver of the third vehicle, who stopped at the intersection, attempted to get Russell to stop by yelling at her, but Russell either did not hear or ignored the warnings of the other driver.
Fortunately, both Russell and Razzano were wearing their seatbelts, a fact which likely saved one or both of their lives. Both their injuries were non-fatal as well as relatively harmless. The Florida Highway Patrol reports that, after the crash, both individuals appeared normal and able to function. Regardless, both individuals were taken by Nature Coast EMS to the Citrus Memorial Hospital to receive a full examination and proper care.
The unnamed stopped driver was not physically involved in the accident.
As of this moment, the only official citation issued is to Razzano for failing to heed the stop sign. Any other legal procedures are pending as the events relating to the accident continue to undergo investigation.
