A recent multi-car accident on Interstate 75 shut down all northbound lanes for several hours and sent three people to the hospital with serious and critical injuries. Florida Highway Patrol troopers say the accident began when a 17-year-old girl lost control of her 2008 Honda Civic, which crossed the median and entered oncoming traffic. They report that when the girl’s Honda jumped over the median, it began to spin and crashed into a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 25-year-old woman. When the Honda struck the pickup truck, the collision pushed the Chevrolet into the path of a 200 Ford Ranger pickup driven by another woman, age unknown.
The collision with the Chevrolet caused the Honda to split into two segments and catch fire. All three drivers were injured in the crash. The driver of the Chevrolet pickup was taken to the Florida Hospital in Zephyrhills in serious condition. The driver of the Honda was taken to an undisclosed hospital, where she was held in critical condition. The driver of the Ford Ranger pickup suffered minor injuries in the crash and declined medical attention. The crashes closed all northbound lanes of I-75 at Mile Marker 279 near State Road 54 from 5:40 p.m. until shortly before midnight while troopers conducted their investigation and the road was cleared of crash debris. Troopers have not yet announced whether or not they plan to file charges in connection with the accident.
If troopers do file charges against the driver of the Honda, she and her insurance company could be held liable for the damages she caused. Younger, less experienced drivers are often distracted by talking and texting on cell phones, reaching for objects on the floor and other distractions.
