Several vehicles were involved in a Hillsborough County crash on January 3rd that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist. Reports from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office state that the incident happened just after 7:45 in the morning, close to the intersection of Dacca Drive and Madison Avenue.
At this time, a 55-year-old Tampa resident was behind the wheel of a 2006 Ford F-250 as she made her way down the southbound lane of Dacca. When she reached the intersection of Dacca Drive and Madison Avenue, she slowed her car down in obedience to the stop sign posted there.
At this same time, a 34-year-old Tampa resident was driving a 2004 Suzuki GSXR-600 motorcycle down the western lane of Madison Avenue. They were driving behind another vehicle – not described in any of the reports – and reached the stop sign at around the same time as the Ford F-250. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department stated that the car before the motorcycle passed through the intersection. The motorcycle, possibly close behind the car, also tried to pass through the intersection. Not seeing the motorcycle, the driver of the Ford F-250 pulled out into the intersection after the first passed.
It appears that the driver of the Ford saw the motorcyclist, attempted to stop, and then accelerated again. The driver of the motorcycle attempted to swerve away from the truck, squeezing their breaks as well, but none of this was enough to prevent the collision and the biker struck the rear left side of the much larger vehicle.
The fact that the motorcyclist was badly injured was immediately apparent. Witnesses to the scene rushed over to them and began to perform CPR while 9-1-1 was called. Paramedics and EMTs as well as other emergency response crews rushed to the scene to try and help the badly injured cyclist, but it is believed that the injures they sustained in the accident were extremely severe. The reports did not indicate if the motorcyclist was transported to a hospital, but we do know that they were ultimately declared dead due to the severity of the wounds they received in the accident.
An investigation into the crash is currently underway.
