A Friday afternoon accident on a Marion County stretch of I-75 has resulted in the death of at least one individual, the hospitalization of several others, and a traffic jam that stretched for miles. Scant information currently exists regarding the incident, and authorities will wait to release further details until all victims are identified and their next of kin informed. This being said, the Florida Highway Patrol’s spokesperson, Lt. Patrick Riodan, did issue a cursory statement regarding the crash that discusses all currently available details.
According to this statement, that crash took place close to 1:00 in the afternoon, near to mile marker 372. The accident occurred the northbound lanes of I-75 and seems to have involved several tractor trailers. Although the exact course of events is not yet clear, it seems that the crash also included several cars. A picture from the scene of the crash shows a pile-up close to the shoulder of I-75’s northbound lanes. Smoke obscures most of the scene, although it is possible to make out the two trucks as well as several other vehicles that appear to be spun around and facing the wrong direction. The cab on one of the trucks is clearly crumpled. A white van appears to be sitting about 25 feet away from the highway, although it is not clear whether or not the van was involved in the crash or if it belongs to first responders.
As stated above, at least one person died as a result of the crash. It is not known whether this individual was a truck driver or if they were in one of the several cars involved. Officials with Marion County Fire Rescue further reported that six additional individuals suffered injuries as a result of the crash. All of them were transported to local hospitals, and some of them were admitted as being trauma alerts. The current condition of these six victims is not known, although we can expect that the Florida Highway Patrol and the Marion County Fire Rescue team will release further details as they emerge.
No specific cause for the crash is yet known. Officials consider the investigation ongoing.
