A fatal car crash in Brevard County remains under investigation by members of the Florida Highway Patrol working within the county limits. The crash itself took place along a stretch of Interstate 95 within Brevard County, close to the 162 mile marker. Involved in the collision were an 18-year-old driver from Coral Springs and their 16-year-old passenger. Only a single vehicle was reported to have been involved in the crash, and no one other than the driver and their passenger were involved in the incident.
It was close to 1:00 on the morning of Saturday, March 27th, that the 18-year-old was behind the wheel of a vehicle and traveling down the northern lanes of I-95. As they neared the 162 mile marker, something happened within the cab of the vehicle to cause the driver of the car to lose control and swerve off of the highway. Before they were able to regain control of the car, the vehicle struck a large pole standing near to the road. The force of this crash caused the car to suffer severe damage which was then passed on to the vehicle’s inhabitants.
While the reports did not mention who first notified the police in regards to the incident, we know that emergency response crews rushed to the area shortly after the crash took place. When they arrived, EMTs and paramedics immediately began to provide both the 18-year-old and the 16-year-old with emergency medical treatment. Sadly, the severity of the injuries suffered by the 18-year-old prevented any intervention from restoring him. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash as a result of the injuries he sustained.
The 16-year-old, who was wearing their seatbelt at the time of the collision, only suffered minor injuries in the accident. Even though their injuries were not life-threatening, they were transported from the scene of the crash via helicopter, which took them straight to Holmes Regional Hospital.
As stated above, an investigation remains ongoing. As a part of it, authorities are looking into whether or not the 18-year-old was indeed wearing their own seatbelt at the time of the crash.
