In a horrific accident on the morning of Monday, February 15th, 2016, one person was killed and another was severely injured when the RV they were traveling in crashed into the ditch in Ormond Beach, Florida.
According to police, the vehicle was driving on U.S. 1 near I-95 around 1 a.m. that Monday when it left the roadway and crashed into a ditch, then a tree. After it collided with the tree, the RV then caught fire with both the driver and the passenger trapped inside. The passenger was killed in the accident, while the driver survived with third-degree burns after an on-scene witness pulled him out shortly before the vehicle exploded.
Due to the severity of their burns, Ormond Beach authorities were not immediately able to identify the victims. Authorities also suspect that the two victims may have been in town for NASCAR events, as racing memorabilia was found in the wreckage.
According to Florida State investigators, the impact of the crash was so intense that pieces of the RV exploded off of the vehicle when it hit collided with the tree, ejecting RV parts across the nearby Dairy Queen parking lot. Witness Carla Johnson, who was working nearby after the crash, said that because the damage to the RV was so severe, it was not recognizable as a vehicle after the incident.
