An ongoing investigation in Sumter County has resulted after a multi-vehicle crash took place on Monday, June 22nd, while motorists were traveling along the Florida Turnpike. Reports issued by the Florida Highway Patrol at the time of this writing suggested that the incident happened at mile marker 299 on the Florida Highway Patrol and involved at least three vehicles including two vans. Within the vehicles were numerous passengers, including an 84-year-old woman who was a resident of Pompano Beach.
It was during the evening on the Monday in question when a van was being driven down the southern lanes of the Florida Turnpike in Sumter County. At this same time, southbound traffic close to mile marker 299 had slowed considerably for reasons likely related to rush hour. As the driver of the van approached the slower traffic, it appeared as though they remained unaware of the slower moving vehicles for quite some time. In fact, based on the evidence from the scene it appears as though the driver of the van remained unaware of the stopped traffic until it was too late for them to do anything to avoid it.
The van then struck the rear of a second vehicle, also a van, with a considerable amount of force. This rear-end collision caused the second van to lurch forward and strike the rear of a pickup truck that was traveling before it.
The three-vehicle crash was severe enough to cause individuals within the vehicles to sustain serious injuries. At the time of this writing, we know that the 84-year-old woman was a passenger within the first van. As a result of the collisions, she sustained injuries that were not able to be treated by the emergency response crews that rushed to the scene following the incident. She was declared dead at the crash site. The driver of this van as well as a second passenger also suffered from serious injuries.
Inside of the second van, both the driver and two of the passengers suffered from severe injuries. It is believed that all of the injured parties were rushed from the scene of the crash to nearby hospitals.
