At an unspecified time on Friday, deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of a burglary at a home located along Sweet Heather Lane in Ocoee. While the specific details of the initial report on the burglary are not known, it seems that the deputies arrived in time to discover the burglars as they were starting to leave the home. Rather than surrender to the police, the burglars decided instead to try their luck at fleeing their would-be captors, initiating a chase that took them away from Sweet Heather Lane, through the intersection of Silver Star and Clark Road, and ultimately to a place near Vineland Road.
The Orange County deputies, close on the heels of the fleeing robbers, managed to stay on the trail and ultimately apprehend the two fleeing individuals, but not before one of the pursuing officers became involved in an incident of their own.
While driving through Silver Star and Clark Road, one of the deputies collided with another vehicle, a red car that has not been further described. While it is not known if the cruiser had their lights on at the time of the incident, it is clear that the force of the collision resulted in both the officer behind the wheel of the cruiser and the unnamed civilian driving the red car to be transported to nearby hospitals.
Currently, the condition of both individuals is not known, pending the notification of their families and the update of the story’s official report.
It is not believed that anyone other than the officer in the cruiser and the driver of the red car was injured as a result of the accident. Currently, a full investigation into the event is being launched by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department as they seek to uncover the circumstances that resulted in one of their deputies striking a civilian vehicle in a crash that resulted in multiple injuries. It is likely that the investigation will take into consideration the possibility of substance abuse as well as the possibility that either the officer or the civilian in the red car was not obeying all traffic laws.
