This past Sunday, the intersection in Silver Springs between East Highway 40 and Southeast 196th Terrace Road was the site of an accident between two cars that sent numerous people, including four children, to the hospital. While the specifics of the crash have yet to be released, the Florida Highway Patrol has issued a statement concerning the incident that includes all of the available details.
It seems that the accident took place on Sunday afternoon, just after 5:00. Based on pictures of the crash site, it seems highly probable that the accident was a head-on collision. The emergency response teams that quickly arrived at the scene included firefighters who were were able to pull all the victims of the crash from the vehicles. Between the two cars, four children and two adults were involved in the crash. It is believed that two of the children suffered non-life threatening injuries, although they were still transported to the hospital. The other two children and both adults were also rushed to nearby hospitals. These four individuals were all listed as being “trauma alert.”
At the time of this writing, the condition of those who were transported to the hospital is not known. Also unknown are the identities of any of those involved. In the photograph of the crash, two vehicles can be seen, both badly damaged, with one looking as though it flipped over several times before landing upright again.
Car accidents, especially head-on collisions, are one of the leading causes of accidental death in the country. Every year, thousands of individuals die as a result of these crashes. Most upsetting is that, in the majority of cases, these crashes are avoidable. Head-on collisions are often caused by distracted driving. During the follow-up investigation, authorities often find that drivers involved in head-on collisions were on their cellphones shortly before the accident, looking somewhere other than the road ahead of them, or intoxicated. These poor decisions lead to life-changing and life-threatening injuries for the crash victims, making it imperative that all those on the road pay attention at all times.
