Florida Highway Patrol troopers say they expect to see an increase in Orlando car crashes following the heavy rains that have hit Central Florida in recent weeks. Just last Monday, within a window of just four hours, the FHP reported responding to over 100 automobile accidents in Orange County – the majority of which were caused by the slippery road conditions caused by the day’s ongoing rainfall. With more rain in the forecast, FHP announced that it has assigned an additional eight troopers to help respond to crashes.
Speaking to a local news station, one FHP spokesperson urged drivers to use caution, noting that roads are at their slickest during the first 10 minutes of rain. As FHP prioritizes how it responds to crashes based first on injuries and second on road closure, with so many accidents happening some minor accidents are likely going to have to wait. On Monday, it took troopers up to three hours to respond to some minor crashes.
FHP also stresses that drivers should report all crashes – even if there are no injuries – to law enforcement. If there are no injuries, the car crash can be reported via the FHP’s online crash report. Drivers should also exchange registration and insurance information. Furthermore, according to Orlando Personal Injury Attorney James O. Cunningham, P.A., anyone involved in an Orlando automobile accident should go seek medical attention. He says this is important, even when there are no visible injuries, as often times injuries will not manifest until days – even weeks – after the accident happened. If later one realizes they were in fact injured during the accident, they could have the right to seek compensation for their injuries. However, if there is no medical record relating to the accident, it can become very difficult to prove that the injuries were caused by the accident. In some case, failure to seek immediate medical attention can even lead to one being denied the compensation they deserve.
