Orange County based members of the Florida Highway Patrol are looking into an automobile accident that resulted in the death of an Orlando resident on the night of Monday, July 27th. According to reports from the authorities who responded to the accident, the crash was the result of one of the drivers involved driving the wrong way.
It was shortly before 9:00 in the evening when a 61-year-old individual was driving a Nissan Maxima down the western lanes of State Road 408. As this individual was traveling down the road, they passed a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol who was on the scene to respond to another crash that had taken place along the same roadway, close to Old Winter Garden Road. The trooper could not help but notice that the Maxima was traveling the wrong way down the road: westbound, but in the eastbound lanes.
The trooper did not follow the car but instead reported the sighting to other agencies in the area. It was while these other agencies were working to gather members together in order to facilitate an appropriate response to the incident that the Nissan Maxima collided head-on with a pickup truck traveling eastward down the eastbound lanes.
By the time that the emergency response crews reached the scene, both of the drivers involved had suffered from serious injuries. The accident had inflicted particular severe injuries on the 61-year-old driver who was immediately transported from the scene to Orlando Health. It was sometime after being admitted to this emergency medical facility that the 61-year-old was declared dead.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 30-year-old who was not named in the initial report, was also transported from the area of the crash to a nearby hospital. It is believed that the injuries that this person sustained were fairly serious, although the reports did indicate that they were not in life-threatening condition after the accident occurred.
An investigation into just why the driver of the Maxima was traveling the wrong way down the road remains ongoing. At the time of this writing, no dominant theories have been suggested or promoted.
