An accident that occurred in Melbourne on I-95 last week took the life of a teenager and seriously injured five other teens. Brandon Fritz was ejected from a van and killed when a blown tire caused the van to hit another car and turn over many times. The six teenagers were going back home after winning a basketball tournament in Orlando. The teens were just minutes from home, and the accident occurred on the south side of the interstate near the Pineda Causeway.Fritz was a student at Eau Gallie High, and all of the teens were AAU teammates. The five boys were taken to Holmes Regional Hospital in serious condition. They are Zachary Roy, 16, of Melbourne, Lucious McKay, 17, of Palm Bay, Dymond Thomas, 15, of Palm Bay, Michael McCauley, 15, of Melbourne and Alexander Hartfield, 15, of Pam Bay. There were two people in the other car involved in the accident, and they only had minor injuries.
One of Fritz’s teammates said, “He was smart. Everyone loved to hang around Brandon. Another said, “Basketball was what he dreamed about. It was his life.” Fritz was known as a player who always wanted to win and hoped to play professionally one day. Brevard school leaders will have trained psychologists as well as crisis teams available.
