If you’re one of the few people who still don’t buckle a seat belt when driving or riding in a car, truck or SUV, it’s going to cost you. Florida law enforcement officials at the state, county and locals levels are cracking down on drivers disobeying seat belt laws. The Click It or Ticket campaign, which officially ran from March 1 to 15, but is still vigorously enforced, has resulted in 37,000 traffic tickets written, 6,500 of them for failing to buckle up.

Many people are trying to improve their health and take advantage of our state’s wonderful weather at the same time by riding their bicycles. Seeing bicycling clubs out for a ride together on streets and highways is a very common sight in and around the Orlando area and other parts of the state. But this Orlando Sentinel article reports that not all Floridians are thrilled with the growing number of riders on the roads. The article cites the experiences of one Clermont man who is a security guard who often sees large packs of bicyclists on his way to work each day.

An article published recently in the Orlando Sentinel describes a hit-and-run pedestrian accident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old Leesburg High student from Okahumpka. A car hit the young man as he walked along County Road 33 on October 4 while talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone. After the pedestrian accident, the victim was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he died when taken off life support.
The victim’s mother has urged law enforcement authorities to investigate the pedestrian accident, but the lack of publicity in the case has made her uncertain whether or not the police were looking for the driver who struck the young man and fled from the scene. She went public recently with her dissatisfaction about the lack of cooperation and communication in the case.
