In a tragic accident last Monday evening in Okaloosa County, former Florida state Senator Greg Evers, 62, was involved in a fatal single-car accident near his farm in Baker.
Florida Highway Patrol discovered Evers’ vehicle the next day, submerged in a creek that runs along the side of Griffith Mill Road, which is where the accident occurred. Authorities have stated that it appears Mr. Evers failed to properly maneuver a sharp curve in the road, thus losing control of his vehicle, ultimately ending up in the creek. There were no passengers in his vehicle at the time of the crash. The accident is under further investigation.
Sarah Bascom, a family spokeswoman, released a statement shortly after the accident: “On behalf of the family of former state Sen. Greg Evers, it is with great sadness that we announce his passing. The family asks for your prayers as they deal with this sudden loss.”
Condolences have been coming in from friends, co-workers, and other elected officials from all over the state of Florida. Governor Rick Scott tweeted: “Ann and I are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Sen. Greg Evers. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family.”
As a native Floridian, Evers served 9 years in the Florida House before being elected to the Senate in 2010. He was dedicated to the active and former military members of his district and community, as well as an advocate for criminal justice reform, corrections officers, and gun rights. He was also a steadfast supporter of the Second Amendment.
In 2016, Evers left his Senate position in order to run for Congress. His campaign attempt was unsuccessful, as he lost to state Rep. Matt Gaetz. He did, however, gain national attention when he supported the distribution of Homeland Defender AR-15 assault-style rifles, in response to the tragic Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando.
Here at the Law Offices of James O. Cunningham, P.A., we’d like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Senator Evers.
