Two truck drivers and one horse were involved in a violent crash that took place in Polk City this past Wednesday morning. Deputies with the Polk County Police Department wrote a report that detailed some of the elements of the early morning crash, although much of the information regarding the incident is unknown. It is clear that the crash, which happened inside of Polk County, took place at close to 4:45 in the morning along State Road 33 and close to where this road intersects with Green Pond Road.
The two truck drivers were each traveling down State Road 33, although the report did not specify if they were each headed in the same direction or if they were traveling opposite one another. We also don’t know what exactly took place to cause the collision, although the wording of the report suggests that the horse played a significant role in the accident.
It is not clear if the horse was in the road, but it seems that one of the tractor-trailers collided with the animal. It is possible that one or both of the trucks had swerved in an attempt to avoid striking the creature, and it is possible that it was due to this swerving that the two trucks collided with one another instead.
As a result of the crash, the horse died. One of the truck drivers was trapped in their cab, and the report indicated that emergency rescue teams had to carefully unpin him and pull him free. This individual was then placed inside of an ambulance and taken to Lakeland Regional Health. The official report said that when he was admitted into the medical facility he was described as having serious injuries, but the report also made sure to indicate that he was expected to survive. The current condition of the trucker is not clear.
The second truck driver managed to escape injury all together.
The crash resulted in the closure of all State Road 33’s lanes for a period of several hours while the initial investigation was conducted. It is not clear if the investigation is ongoing.
