A recent fatal accident involving two tractor-trailers on Interstate 95 killed one man and forced authorities to close the interstate for several hours to investigate the crash and clear debris from the roadway. Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that one of the trucks was a tanker carrying fuel, which caught fire and exploded during the accident. Troopers say that the driver of the tanker truck, a 41-year-old Jacksonville man, was fatally injured in the accident.
Troopers report that the victim, who worked for Florida Rock and Rank Lines, Inc., was driving his tanker northbound on I-95 when he struck the rear of the tractor-trailer in front of him. The impact caused the tanker to overturn, explode into flames and spill fuel across all three lanes of traffic. The driver of the other truck, a 33-year-old Winter Haven man, was uninjured in the crash but was arrested and held on a warrant and $2,000 bond for an unrelated incident.
The accident closed I-95 between Palm Coast Parkway and U.S. 1 for several hours while repair crews repaved the damaged section of roadway. Troopers say that northbound I-95 traffic was rerouted to go north in the southbound lanes at mile marker 289. Traffic lights on State Road 100 near the closed interstate were re-timed to reduce traffic congestion while debris was cleared and the roadway was repaired.
Fortunately, no passenger vehicles were involved in this accident but it illustrates the dangers of smaller vehicles sharing the roads with vehicles weighing many tens of thousands of pounds, some carrying fuel and other hazardous materials.
