An investigation into a possible DUI is underway within Marion County after a drunk driving accident took place along Interstate 75 that resulted in a violent collision between a car and a cruiser with the Florida Highway Patrol. Reports from the FHP indicated that the incident began shortly before 9:30 when a pair of troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were inside of their cruiser, parked in a paved emergency lane along the side of the highway.
This past weekend saw the convergence of three events that habitually take place around this time of year and always lead to a sharp increase in the number of drunk driving accidents and injuries. These events are, of course, the beginning of Spring Break, the end of Bike Week, and St. Patrick’s Day. In order to hopefully cut down on the number of crashes and deaths that the mixture of celebrations can often induce, 12 different law enforcement groups throughout the Central Florida area teamed up to create what they identified as a Saturation Patrol.
In a move that Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham fully supports, Florida Governor Rick Scott recently designated December as National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month in our state. Taking part in the national campaign, the governor instructed the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) to enhance public awareness about safer driving habits during the holiday season. Drivers intoxicated by alcohol and/or drugs caused nearly 19,000 auto accidents across the country in 2010, leading to more than 13,000 injuries and hundreds of deaths.
