Around 7:00 am on the morning of the 18th (Monday), an accident involving a car and a pedestrian took place just in front of 1625 Beulah Road in Winter Garden. As this incident only occurred a few hours ago, reports on what exactly happened are still forthcoming; however based on the available facts we can piece together a generally comprehensive outline of the events of this morning.
Hurricane Irma interrupted the normal school schedule for many counties within the state of Florida. The town of Winter Garden, located within Orange County, was one that decided on shutting down the school rather than force children, their parents, and teachers to brave dangerous weather in order to make it to class on time. Monday, the 18th, is the first day that children are returning to schools in the Winter Garden area.
The accident that took place this morning happened directly before West Orange High School, where the pedestrian is a student. Little is known about the victim other than that they are enrolled in West Orange High School and were on their way to class when the car struck them. Emergency first responders arrived at Winter Garden High School shortly after the incident took place and transported the teenager to Arnold Palmer Hospital. The report indicated that the young person sustained an injury to their head but that the injury is not being considered life threatening or severe and the teenager is expected to recover without additional problems.
The report on the event included no information regarding the individual behind the wheel of the car, whether or not they were a parent driving their own child to the school, or if they were just a driver who happened to pass through the area at the time high school students were filing into the classrooms. It is not known whether or not the student was using a crosswalk at the time of the crash or if the driver of the car was obeying all posted traffic signs.
A full investigation into the incident is currently underway, and the Winter Garden Police Department expect to possess more comprehensive answers within a short period of time.
