March 4, 2018

Around 5:45 on the morning of Wednesday, February 28th, a 20-year-old Orlando resident was on foot in the Orange County town of Pine Hills as she walked near the intersection of North Powers Drive and Silver Star Road.  According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the woman was walking on the sidewalk before the condominium complex known as Oak Shadows when, for reasons that are not totally clear, she walked into the road.

The report did not indicate if the woman was attempting to cross the road or if she had just stepped out into the road, but we do know that a 2010 Nissan being driven by a 65-year-old man from Orlando was traveling down North Powers Drive at the same time as the young woman entered the area of the street.

It is not clear if the driver of the Nissan saw the woman, if he made any attempts to stop, or if the following events came as a complete surprise, but we do know that the woman, who was not in a crosswalk at the time, was struck by the vehicle before she was able to leave the road and step back onto a sidewalk.

Members of the Florida Highway Patrol told reporters that they and other emergency first responders were called in and they subsequently rushed to the scene of the accident.  There, they found the woman badly injured but still alive.  She was treated by the paramedics who were able to revive her before loading her into the ambulance which then sped off towards Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was taken out and admitted into the medical facility.  Doctors began to treat her for the serious injuries she suffered in the accident, but their efforts were not able to overcome the extent of the damage.  She was declared dead sometime after arriving at the hospital.

The report also indicated that at the time of the collision between her and the car, the pedestrian was pregnant with a near-term fetus, which was also not able to be saved.

It is unclear whether or not any charges will be filed against the driver of the Nissan in relation to this incident.
