On Wednesday, we reported on an accident between a 10-year-old boy returning home from school on his bicycle who was struck by a truck while at the intersection of Palm Bay’s Eldron Boulevard and Bayside Lakes Boulevard. Today we are updating the story due to its tragic outcome. The boy, who has still not been named, was quickly transported to the Palm Bay Hospital, but unfortunately the efforts of the first responders and the doctors at the hospital itself were not enough to save the boy from the catastrophic injuries he suffered. He died after arriving at the hospital.
When we first reported on the incident, we were unable to provide much information about it other than the date, the time, and the most basic outline of the events as they occurred. The Florida Highway Patrol has since then released more facts about the case, and we would like to add their new information to our initial reporting on the case.
Shortly before 1:45, The child, a fourth-grader, was returning home from Odyssey Charter Elementary School, where he was a student. Coming to the crosswalk at Eldron Boulevard and Bayside Lakes Boulevard (directly across from the popular restaurant Beef O’Brady’s), the child began to cross. According to Brevard County Police, the boy had reason to believe that the driver of the truck had seen him, and that his crossing was not a haphazard event. However, for reasons that are not yet certain, the truck continued to drive through the intersection, striking the boy.
Witnesses to the incident say that there was a tremendous amount of blood. This being a well-trafficked intersection, and it being around the time of day when many other children were on their way home from school, a crowd of people were standing by to either see the accident itself or to watch its aftermath, as people attempted to save the boy who was subsequently rushed to the hospital.
Although the new information relating to this case feels comprehensive, it is still to be seen whether or not any charges will be leveled against the driver of the truck. The Palm Bay Police Department indicates that they are still gathering information about the incident and are therefore waiting before stating anything one way or another.
