Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol are in the process of locating the driver behind a perceived hit-and-run that took place in Lake County sometime before 11:00 on the morning of Wednesday, June 20th. The information currently held by the troopers was compiled almost exclusively from the crash site, and as of yet it is not known if any witnesses to the incident have come forward to offer information about the collision.
Initial reports indicate that an emergency call came into the Florida Highway Patrol at around 10:45 in the morning. This call, placed by an unknown individual, indicated that a person was lying on or near to County Road 44 and they appeared to have been struck by a car.
The Florida Highway Patrol as well as EMTs and paramedics from around Lake County rushed to the scene, but there was nothing that could be done for the injured individual, and they were declared dead at the scene of the incident.
Reconstruction efforts have deduced that the most likely scenario is that at some point during the late night or early morning hours, the victim (a 38-year-old) was walking a bicycle along County Road 44’s shoulder when a passing car collided with them. It is believed that the car struck the walking cyclist with it’s front right side. After the collision, it appears that the driver of the car decided to flee from the area rather than remain at the scene to try and help the person.
Earlier on Thursday, a call came into the Florida Highway Patrol from the owner of a 2003 Ford Escape. According to this person, they believed that their car had been involved in an incident during the previous night. An initial investigation concluded that the damage to the front right side of the Ford Escape was concurrent with the damage that would likely have been done to the car that struck the cyclist. At the time of this writing it is not clear who was driving this car during the time in question, and it has also not been confirmed that this was indeed the car involved in the incident.
