A crash that took place last Tuesday in Deltona has ultimately resulted in the death of one individual after they spent two days receiving medical care at Central Florida Regional Hospital. The official report from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office provides details on every aspect of the incident, giving us information on how it began and ended.
The story is unusual: a man believed to be 77-years-old was sitting on a motorized bicycle as this bike was being pulled behind a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The bike was attached to the truck by a rope. Driving the truck was the 77-year-old motorists 66-year-old fiancé.
Volusia County deputies told reporters that the woman was driving the truck down the eastern lanes of Saxon Boulevard. It seems that the couple was in the process of transporting the bicycle to a repair shop, although neither the final report nor the initial statement from the deputies indicated which repair shop the two were headed towards.
As the duo neared Cranbrook Avenue, the driver of the Ford began to slow down in preparation to make the turn. The story becomes slightly murky at this point, and it is not entirely clear just how the following events occurred. The bike either destabilized and fell over or it crashed into something (such as the rear of the truck). Either way, the 77-year-old man was thrust from the seat of the bike. He crashed to the pavement with incredible force and suffered from severe damage. The reports stated that the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and that some of the worst damages he experienced were inflicted on his head.
Emergency response teams—including the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department and the Volusia County Fire and Rescue Department, arrived at the scene shortly after the man was thrown from the bike. He received early treatment both on the ground and in the ambulance while he was rushed to Central Florida Regional Hospital.
Doctors at the hospital managed to keep him alive for several days while they treated him for his various injuries, but unfortunately the extent of the damage was just too great and he was declared dead several days after arriving at the medical center.
No charges are currently pending against the driver of the truck, and officials have ruled out both speed and alcohol as possible contributing factors to the crash.
