A terrifying incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Brevard County. Around 1:45pm, an unnamed 10-year-old boy was riding his bicycle home from his school. His path took him to the intersection of Eldron Boulevard and Bayside Lakes Boulevard, an intersection that is located in Palm Bay. The boy was traveling within his designated space, obeying the rules of the road, and began crossing the intersection using the provided crosswalk.
Also attempting to maneuver through the intersection was a truck of unspecified size and make. The truck driver made a right turn, crossing over the crosswalk, at the same moment that the 4th grade child was peddling through it. According to the Palm Bay Police officers who tended to the boy, he believed that the driver of the truck had seen him before he began crossing the street. This is, in fact, why the boy felt it was a good time to cross: because he believed that the driver of the truck had noticed him and therefore would not continue driving.
Regardless of whether or not the driver noticed the boy, he continued to try and drive through the intersection. The truck hit the boy on the bike, sending him flying across the street, and badly injuring him. Emergency medical teams arrived shortly afterwards and rushed the child to the Palm Bay Hospital, but it is not clear as to what the child’s condition was when he arrived at the medical facility. Nor is it known just what caused the driver of the truck to, in the best case scenario, miss seeing the child crossing in the crosswalk.
No charges have yet been filed, and the situation is still very much under investigation. Several lanes around the intersection were closed for a brief period of time while detectives and police gathered as much evidence as possible surrounding the scene of the crash. The driver of the truck, as is common in such cases, did not suffer any injuries from the accident, although they did stay at the scene after the initial collision, preventing them from being subjected to extremely harsh judicial conclusions.
