The latest recall affects 412,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in the U.S. and addresses steering problems that can cause the steering to lock up unexpectedly. Toyota has recalled 373,000 Toyota Avalon sedans and 39,000 Lexus 470 SUVs to correct a defective part in the steering assembly.

Toyota claims that a part called a steering lock bar, which locks the steering wheel when one turns off the ignition, was improperly cast, and this can cause a crack to form on its surface. The crack can expand over time, causing the steering wheel to freeze in place while driving. The models affected by the recall include the 2000 through 2004 Toyota Avalon models as well as 2003 through 2007 Lexus 470 models.
