Honda recently announced a voluntary recall for nearly 900,000 of its Odyssey minivans for potential fire risks. The automaker reported that the recall affects 886,815 Odyssey models from the 2005 to 2010 model years due to problems with a cover on the vehicle’s fuel strainer. Honda says that the cover of the strainer, located at the top of the gas tank, could crack over time and lead to a fuel leak, increasing the risk of fire.
In their official recall statement, the automaker said, “Honda is not aware of any crashes, injuries or fires related to this issue, which was discovered during warranty repairs.”
Honda cautioned owners of the recalled minivans that fixing the issue could take some time, as manufacturers have not yet ramped up production of replacement parts. Honda did say that owners of recalled Odysseys would receive two notices. They will receive the first notice in late April or early may, which will let owners know that their minivan is affected by the recall. The second notice will be sent sometime this summer, when dealers have the new parts in stock and notify owners that they can schedule an appointment to correct the problem, which will be done free of charge.
Honda said that they first noticed the problem in October 2012, when auditors noticed a surge in demand for fuel pump replacement parts. After further study, they found that acids commonly found in car wash chemicals might be causing the cracks, prompting them to launch a broader investigation. After months of testing, Honda confirmed that car wash chemicals were causing the cracks in the fuel strainers.
