A deadly incident occurred in Orange County at the end of last week involving a pedestrian and a semi-truck that was parked behind the Dollar General located at 3986 S. Orange Blossom Trail. The Florida Highway Patrol issued a statement after the accident that provides us with the most important details, however the statement concludes with the notice that the incident is still under investigation, which means that additional pieces of information may still emerge.
What we do know is that Jones, a 64-year-old Plant City resident, was in the cab of the truck at close to 5:15 in the morning and had started the engine in order to leave from the lot which held the Dollar General. After he put the truck into reverse and began to move, Jones felt the truck unexpectedly collide with something at its back end. Jones then put the truck into gear and pulled forward, thinking that perhaps he had collided with a car or other solid object.
When he exited the vehicle, Jones saw that what he had struck was, in fact, a woman. Emergency services were immediately called into the area to assist the badly injured person. The official report states that the woman, an unnamed 42-year-old St. Cloud resident, was run over two separate times by Jones: once when he initially began to reverse and again when he pulled forward. The injures that she sustained were too traumatic for her to survive. It is not clear from the initial news report whether or not she was alive when the first responders reached the scene or if she had died before any medical treatment could be administered.
An investigation is underway to discover just what the woman was doing behind the truck at that time of day and also why Jones did not see her before he began to reverse the truck. It is not believed that any illicit substances are involved in this scenario, although the report did not specify whether or not any testing had yet been done on either Jones or the deceased woman.
