A crash between a pedestrian and a Jeep SUV that took place in Orange County on Monday evening is still under investigation by the Orlando Police Department as they attempt to unravel the events of the evening and the situation that led to the accident which left one person dead. According to the report issued by the Florida Highway Patrol, Jesus Magadan Palacios was walking across the intersection of Oak Ridge Road and Defiance Avenue at around 9:10 on Monday evening when he was struck by the Jeep. It is not known where Palacios was coming from, nor is it clear where he was headed. The only facts of the case that are confirmed are that Palacios, a 23-year-old from Orlando, was killed in the crash.
Florida Highway Patrol members have reconstructed the scene as best as possible, and their initial findings indicate that Palacios left the sidewalk and began crossing the street as the Jeep was headed towards the intersection. Instead of trying to avoid the vehicle, Palacios, who may not have been aware that a vehicle was even headed towards him, continued across the road, putting himself directly in the path of the Jeep. It is not known whether or not the driver of the Jeep saw Palacios or tried in any way to avoid striking the pedestrian. It is also not known whether or not Palacios was using the crosswalk at the time of the accident.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but the extent of the damage suffered by Palacios was severe and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Jeep has yet to be named. Early reports indicate that they were wearing their seat belt and were not injured in the accident. Furthermore, the initial findings seem to indicate that neither Palacios nor the unnamed driver of the Jeep were intoxicated at the time of the incident. No charges have yet to be filed against the driver of the Jeep, and any official legal action is pending the results of the investigation.
This accident is one of the most recent in the string of pedestrian deaths that have occurred in Orange County over the past few months.
