A spokesperson for Orange City recently issued a statement regarding the death of a pedestrian within Orange City that happened after they were struck by a car on Saturday, October 20th. According to this official statement, the victim was a 49-year-old woman from Orange City who was walking along either U.S. Highway 17/92 or New York Avenue at close to 9:00 at night when they reached the intersection of these two roadways and decided to try and cross the street.
The intersection of U.S. 17/92 and New York Avenue does feature a crosswalk, and the pedestrian in question was using this crosswalk at the time when a car came towards the area. What the report states, however, is that at the time when the pedestrian was attempting to cross the street the walk sign was not illuminated and that, instead, the pedestrian tried to run from one side of the road to the other against the light. It is not clear if they didn’t see the car coming or if they believed that they had enough time to make it across before the car reached the intersection.
The driver of the car, for their part, either failed to see the pedestrian or was not able to swerve out of the way in time. The car then struck the pedestrian, throwing her to the ground and inflicting tremendous damage on her.
Paramedics and EMTs were called in to the scene and rushed to tend to the badly injured pedestrian. It is not clear if she was alive when the medical teams reached her, but we do know that the injuries she sustained in the accident were more severe than what she could recover from and she was declared dead at the incident.
At the time of this writing, the fatal collision is still under investigation as authorities attempt to ascertain just why the pedestrian was crossing at the time they chose and whether or not the driver of the car could have avoided the pedestrian.
No charges have been filed and the driver of the car was not injured.
