Close to Tampa on the morning of Thursday, December 5th, a pedestrian accident occurred either near or in the road close to the intersection of U.S. 19 and Main Street. It is not believed that the pedestrian was at this intersection, rather, the reports indicated that they were somewhere south of the Main Street intersection.
It is not clear if the pedestrian was inside of a crosswalk at the time of the incident, if they were on the sidewalk, or if they were walking along the side of the road. It is also possible that the pedestrian was walking across the road at an area where no crosswalks or other pedestrian safety features exist.
What we do know is that it was around 1:00 in the morning when the individual, a 39-year-old who was not named in the initial reports, was on foot inside of or near enough to the roadway to be in the way of passing vehicles.
It is not known if the driver of the car noticed the pedestrian as it neared the area where they were standing or walking. It is not known if the pedestrian noticed the car. It is also not known if either the driver of the car or the pedestrian made any attempts to evade the other. Regardless, the car struck the pedestrian with considerable force, enough to throw them to the ground and cause them to sustain considerable injuries. Thankfully, the driver of the car stayed at the scene of the incident while authorities rushed to the location to try and offer medical assistance to the badly injured man on the ground.
The reports did not make clear whether or not the pedestrian was alive when they reached the area, but we do know that they injuries they sustained ultimately proved to be fatal.
During the initial investigation into the crash, another accident happened in the same area when, around 4:00 in the morning, a car attempted to speed through the area and collided with one of the police vehicles. No one was within the police SUV at the time of the crash, and the 24-year-old driver of the car that struck the SUV was not injured.
