Officers with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a collision between a pickup truck and a pedestrian this past Thursday morning. The report that was subsequently filed by the police details how the incident, which involved a Dodge pickup being driven by a 34-year-old woman from Chuluota and a 27-year-old Deltona man who was on foot, occurred at close to 5:30 in the morning, just as many people were beginning their work days.
The driver of the Dodge was driving the truck down the northbound lanes of Howland Boulevard. As she approached the intersection of Howland and Elkcam Boulevard, she reported that the 27-year-old man suddenly walked out in front of the truck. The location where the pedestrian left the sidewalk does not have a crosswalk, and the car’s driver was not expecting a pedestrian to suddenly appear before her. The driver of the Dodge was reportedly unable to avoid the pedestrian and the two collided in Howland Boulevard.
Immediately after the crash, the driver of the Dodge called the police. Officers with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrived shortly afterwards along with paramedics and other first responder crews. While the medical personnel attended to the severely injured man, the deputies began the initial questioning of the driver. They ascertained quickly that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the accident and that at the time that the Dodge and the pedestrian collided there was little or nothing that the Dodge’s driver could have done to prevent the incident. At the time of this writing, it is not believed that the driver of the Dodge will face any charges in relation to the crash.
The paramedics did everything they could for the young man, but the injuries he sustained as a result of the collision were too severe for any medical treatment to fully address. After a short while, the paramedics declared the pedestrian dead at the scene of the incident. It did not appear that the driver of the Dodge was injured in the crash.
A complete investigation is still ongoing into the reasons behind the young man’s decision to leave the sidewalk at that particular time.
