Police with the Leesburg Police Department are continuing to investigate a fatal pedestrian accident that happened along Pine Street on the night of Friday, March 22nd, that resulted in the death of one elderly person and the injury of another. According to the initial reports from the Leesburg Police Department, the incident began when a 60-year-old woman began crossing Pine Street close to its intersection with Knott Street. It is not clear from the reports whether or not the woman was crossing at a crosswalk or other pedestrian zone, and, if so, whether or not she had the right of way. What is clear though is that as she was walking across the road, she was struck by a 2006 Honda Sedan.
The collision between the pedestrian and the Sedan was not fatal, and numerous individuals rushed to the side of the 60-year-old woman who was, according to the witness reports, sitting up in the roadway, dazed, but alive.
Before the authorities or paramedics could reach the area, a 2000 Saturn Coupe approached the accident site. It is not clear if the driver of the Coupe simply failed to notice the people in the roadway and, if so, what it was that resulted in their inability to see the people congregated around the elderly woman, but the driver of the Saturn did not manage to avoid driving straight towards the already injured 60-year-old. While most of the people who’d responded to help her managed to get out of the way, the Saturn did strike both the 60-year-old and a 64-year-old who had stopped to help.
Police, paramedics, EMTs, and other emergency personnel arrived shortly afterwards to offer assistance. At this point, there was nothing that they could do for the 60-year-old and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The 64-year-old was also badly injured after being struck by the Saturn and she was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical attention.
It is not clear if the drivers of the Saturn or the Honda remained at the scene of the accident after the collision took place, but Leesburg Police are still looking for any information the public can provide regarding the incident.
