Police with the Florida Highway Patrol are in the process of investigating a deadly collision between a car and a 54-year-old man from Kissimmee that took place on the evening of Saturday, July 7th. Initial reports on the incident are not completely clear on just what happened, but we do know that it was just before 12:00 at night when the individual was struck by a car while walking down Orange Blossom Trail.
The 54-year-old pedestrian was either closing in on or had just passed through the intersection of Orange Blossom Trail and Hilda Street when a Toyota Camry came down the road towards them. It is not clear if the pedestrian was walking in one of OBT’s lanes or if they were walking along the side of the road when the car approached, and it is not clear if the driver of the car saw them before the collision or if the appearance of the pedestrian took the driver by complete surprise.
For reasons that are not clear, the driver was not able to avoid striking the pedestrian, and the 54-year-old was violently thrown over the car and back onto the pavement. The reports did not indicate if the driver of the Camry remained at the scene or if they fled the area following the collision. The reports also failed to indicate just who was responsible for the initial emergency 9-1-1 call: whether it was the driver of the Camry, the person struck, or a witness to the entire incident.
The police, paramedics, and other EMTs arrived at the location shortly after the emergency notification, and there they found the scene much as described above. The badly injured pedestrian was placed into an ambulance and taken from the area where the crash happened to Osceola Regional Hospital. There, they were treated for critical injuries by medical staff, but all of the medical efforts were of no consequence and the person was pronounced dead sometime after arriving at the medical center.
An investigation into the collision is underway, and the Florida Highway Patrol are looking to glean a greater understanding of the deadly events and their cause.
