A 10-year-old girl has died from her injuries after being struck by a utility truck while walking home from school. Accident investigators say that the girl was walking home from Ventura Elementary School with her 15-year-old sister when she was struck by an Orlando Utilities Commission truck. Florida Highway Patrol troopers are still conducting their investigation into the accident but say that the accident occurred at Pershing Avenue and Wildhorse Road in east Orlando. They say that the 63-year-old truck driver was making a left turn on a green light when his truck was struck by an oncoming vehicle driven by a 53-year-old man. The force of the impact caused the truck to strike the victim, resulting in a traumatic brain injury.
She was rushed to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children following the accident, where she received treatment for more than a week. However, despite numerous attempts to save her life, the victim never awoke and was pronounced brain dead. Surviving family members elected to donate the girl’s organs before the medical team took her off life support. At least six recipients received transplants as a result of the family’s decision.
It is no secret that central Florida in general, and the Orlando metropolitan area in particular, are very dangerous places for pedestrians. Over the last several years, our area has been ranked as the worst or among the worst places in the country for pedestrian accidents. Orlando pedestrian accident attorney James O. Cunningham knows this better than most, as he has been helping injured pedestrians since 1977 and sees what victims and their families go through after a loved one is struck and injured or killed by an automobile.
If FHP troopers determine that the driver who initiated the accident by colliding with the utility truck was negligent, he could be held liable for wrongful death damages by the grieving family. If your family has recently lost a loved one due to the negligent actions of another party and you have questions about your rights and legal options, call Mr. Cunningham today at 386-243-4994 and schedule a free consultation.
