A female from Orlando died following a weekend car versus pedestrian accident that happened in west Orange County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the accident happened around 10:00 on Colonial Drive, near the intersection with Paul Street. The woman, age 46, walking across the crosswalk on Colonial Drive, heading north when she was struck by an oncoming 2013 Dodge, driven by a 27 year old male who was heading west. Although the accident remains under investigation, according to witnesses, the driver had the green light and the pedestrian stepped out in front of him without a walk signal.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Dodge was not injured.
Car versus pedestrian accidents are always dangerous. In fact, according to a 2013 report by the Center for Disease and Control (CDS), 150,000 pedestrians were taken to an emergency room to be treated for injuries sustained from a car versus pedestrian accident. These injuries typically range from:
- Fractures
- Spinal cord injuries
- Brain injuries
- Bruises and cuts
- Broken bones
- Injuries to internal organs
- Paralysis
Unfortunately, the injured are the lucky ones, as more often than not a car versus pedestrian accident will leave the pedestrian dead – such as the case at hand. In fact, according to the same CDC study, in 2013 nearly 5,000 pedestrians were killed by motor vehicles.
The reason that these types of accidents are so dangerous – if not deadly – is because of the speed and strength of a vehicle against an unprotected human. Studies show that the faster the car is traveling, the more likely the accident will result in death. For example, a pedestrian hit by a car traveling 20 miles per hour will have a 5% chance of dying, whereas an individual hit by a car traveling at 40 miles per hour has an 85% chance of dying.
