A 23-year-old Seminole man faces multiple charges in connection with a one-vehicle accident that claimed the life of one of his passengers and injured three others. Florida Highway Patrol troopers say that the man was driving a Ford F150 pickup truck southbound on Worchester Drive near Gainsborough Drive when he lost control of the truck on a curve and crashed into a utility pole and stop sign before colliding with a tree and coming to a stop. The accident occurred in a residential neighborhood near the University of Central Florida.
Troopers say that the suspect was traveling at well over the posted 25 mph speed limit at the time of the crash. The sound from the multiple collisions drew some residents of the University Estates subdivision out of their homes to investigate. They ran to the crash scene and helped victims of the accident get out of the mangled wreckage of the truck. One 24-year-old male passenger, address unknown, was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries. A Clearwater man and woman, both aged 23, were seriously injured in the crash and taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, along with a 33-year-old Indian Rocks Beach man. The driver was transported to Florida Hospital East, where he received treatment for minor injuries.
Troopers report that they smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath at the time of the accident and are waiting for toxicology test results to file drunk driving charges. They say that other charges against the driver are pending.
It has been said many times, but Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham would like to remind readers that friends do not let friends drive while intoxicated. It is reckless, negligent, and foolish, and the deaths, injuries and damage that drunk drivers cause are completely avoidable. Florida law enforcement personnel convicted 33,625 drivers for drunk driving in 2011, with 1,383 of those convictions in Orange County. If those numbers aren’t sobering enough, consider that cops estimate that a drunk driver drives under the influence an average of 80 times before they are arrested.
