Florida Congressman Ted Deutch of Boca Raton is pushing for stricter texting while driving laws. He introduced a bill in the United States House of Representatives on Wednesday, which would empower Florida and other states to enforce stricter laws banning distracted driving. Police would have more power to pull over motorists and give them tickets if they are seen texting while driving.
“There’s no question that looking down to search the Web, send a text message, or log onto Facebook puts you in danger and puts people around you on the road in danger,” said Deutch, according to the Sun Sentinel.
Currently, Florida has some of the most relaxed distracted driving laws in the entire country. According to Distracted.gov, a US government website, 3,154 people were killed in 2013 in crashes where distracted driving was involved. So far, 44 states have a texting while driving ban. Fourteen states also have a ban on talking on a hand-held cellular devices while driving.
