Florida Highway Patrol troopers have announced that they have filed charges against a driver who fatally injured a woman in a recent head-on hit-and-run accident in the Windermere area. Troopers say that a 25-year-old Windermere man was driving a Honda pickup truck on County Road 535 when he rear-ended a car waiting at a stoplight at the intersection of Summerport Village Parkway. The impact pushed the car into two other cars at the light, damaging them both.
"All of a sudden ‘whack’ in the back, a fellow hit us and drove us into this vehicle in front of us, hitting the one in front of him. He must have never touched his brakes," said one driver, whose car was damaged in the accident.
Troopers say that the man then fled from the scene without stopping and drove down C.R. 535 before turning onto Ficquette Road, where he crashed head-on into a car driven by 63-year-old Windermere woman, fatally injuring her. She was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries. The hit-and-run driver was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment for minor injuries. Troopers arrested the man upon release from ORMC and booked him into the Orange County Jail. He now faces charges of DUI manslaughter, three counts of DUI causing property damage and leaving the scene of a crash.
In addition to the criminal charges, the hit-and-run driver could also be liable for wrongful death and other damages in connection with these accidents. With the assistance of an Orlando hit-and-run accident lawyer, the victim’s family could seek damages to help pay for burial expenses, loss of income and companionship and other damages. The drivers and passengers of the others vehicles he struck could seek property damages and other types of compensation from the driver, as well.
