According to the Florida Highway Patrol, an accident near Lake City claimed the life of a 41-year-old Orange Park man. The man was driving in a Ford pickup truck with his wife and two sons westbound on Interstate 10. The Ford was in the outside lane as it passed a rest area where a Subaru was attempting to merge onto the interstate. At the same time, a Ford Mustang was traveling on the inside land also westbound along I-10.
The Ford pickup tried to change lanes to allow the Subaru onto the interstate when the front of the Ford pickup struck the right side of the mustang. The collision caused the driver of the Ford pickup to lose control of the vehicle and sent it into the median where it overturned. The male driver was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Shands hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the accident. His wife and two sons were treated for minor injuries and released. The drivers and occupants of the other two vehicles were not harmed.
The accident is a frightening reminder that drivers should always pay close attention when passing on or off ramps on highways and interstates. The driver of the Ford pickup was trying to allow a vehicle entering the interstate a clear path when another vehicle was in his blind spot. This accident could have probably been prevented with a glance over his shoulder, but other factors are not known at this time such as the speed of the Mustang or whether the Subaru was yielding as it entered the interstate.
While at first glance it may seem that the driver of the Ford pickup may have been at fault, clearly there could be other factors. When accidents such as these occur, it is important to have legal help on your side to sort through all of the evidence and preserve your rights.
