Last Monday, members of the Orange County Fire Rescue were called to the northbound lanes of State Road 429, right around where a connection ramp to the Florida Turnpike is located, in response to a reports of an overturned vehicle. When they arrived, they found a large truck on its side, seemingly having collided with the on-ramp’s guardrail. Also at the scene were numerous bottles of gatorade that had spilled out of the truck’s broken trailer.
The Florida Highway Patrol has issued a report regarding the incident. This report states that the accident took place between 5:00 and 5:30, and seems to have occurred as the truck’s driver was in the process of transferring from State Road 429 and onto the turnpike, which is a highly trafficked roadway that will often experience major traffic jams around rush hour.
As they approached the turnpike’s on-ramp, the driver of the semi-truck either lost control of his vehicle or failed to correctly calculate the amount of space between the vehicle and the guardrail. The truck hit the guardrail in such a way that the driver lost control of the vehicle. Due to the momentum of the vehicle and the violence with which it struck the guardrail, the truck wound up overturning onto the on-ramp, blocking all the lanes and spilling a rainbow of full Gatorade bottles across the asphalt.
While the Orange County Fire Rescue and the Florida Highway Patrol worked to clean up the mess, the ramp to the Florida Turnpike was shut down. This forced drivers along State Road 429 looking to enter the Florida Turnpike to find an alternate route through Orange County as they made their ways to their homes after a long day of work.
The driver of the semi-truck was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center after the crash, however it is believed that the injuries suffered by the individual are not life threatening. This is not to say that the injuries are not serious, and it is well known that even the most minor harm incurred as a result of a car accident can lead to greater medical complications in the future.
