A Florida Central News article reports that officials with the Florida Highway Patrol are investigating a recent five-vehicle accident in Lakeland that claimed the lives of three people. FHP officials say that the accident occurred around 4 pm on U.S. Highway 98 just south of Rockridge Road when a Chevrolet pickup truck crashed head-on with a motorcycle. They say the pickup was driven by a 65-year-old woman who veered into the path of a motorcycle operated by a 55-year-old man.

The pickup’s driver was killed in the accident, as was the motorcycle’s passenger-a woman whose identity and age was not released by the FHP when the article was published. The 55-year-old motorcycle rider suffered critical injuries in the accident and was flown to Tampa General Hospital in a helicopter. The 51-year old driver of a Ford pickup truck behind the motorcycle also died in the accident. FHP officials say that he swerved to avoid the initial accident, but crashed into the left front of the oncoming Chevy pickup. The force of the collision caused the Ford pickup to land on its roof.

The 27-year-old passenger in the Ford pickup suffered serious injuries and was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment. His condition was unavailable when the article was published. Accident investigators do not yet know what caused the Chevy pickup to veer into the oncoming lane of traffic. The drivers of the other two vehicles involved in the Florida car accident sustained no injuries in the crash and investigators said that all of the people in the vehicles were wearing safety belts at the time of the accident. The accident closed U.S. 98 in both directions for several hours while emergency response personnel investigated the accident scene and cleared debris.

Auto accident victims and their families face physical and financial hardship while they recover from their injuries. In addition to the steep costs of medical care and rehabilitation, they also must contend with loss of function and income, life-changing injuries and terrible loss. Orlando car accident lawyer James O. Cunningham has been helping accident victims for well over thirty years.

A humorous and ostensibly harmless trend among some Florida motorcycle riders has also shown a troublesome and negligent side. Recently, law enforcement officials have caught a number of Florida riders operating their bikes without any clothes on. Naked motorcycle riding might present a hazard for distracted drivers, but in some cases these riders are operating their bikes under the influence of alcohol and that is a far greater concern. According to Ocala police, the first incident occurred in mid-September when an officer pulled over a drunken rider.

The police say they noticed the naked rider early one morning on I75 and pulled him over for running a red light. The 45-year-old rider admitted that he had been drinking and a breathalyzer returned blood alcohol levels of .178 and .162-both dangerously over Florida’s legal limit of 0.08. The naked rider told police he had been drinking at a local restaurant. Police found a shirt and shawl hanging around the motorcycle’s handlebars and requested that the rider wear them. Records indicated that this drunken driving conviction was the rider’s fifth offense.

In a related incident two days later, the Florida Highway Patrol arrested another motorcyclist riding his blue Honda on I95 in Flagler County without any clothes on. FHP officers claimed that the 45-year-old rider was performing a sexual act while riding and intentionally exposed himself to a woman driving a tractor-trailer and her passenger, her 11-year-old son. The man was not charged with driving under the influence, but faces charges of lascivious exhibition and indecent exposure.

Although some aspects of these stories may be humorous, there is nothing amusing about people operating any kind of vehicle under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. In 2006, 1111 people were killed in alcohol-related accidents and thousands more were injured. Drunk driving is exceptionally egregious because it is entirely preventable. People who drink and drive know that their behavior is illegal and negligent but do it anyway and endanger the lives of others.

If you or someone you care for has been injured or killed in an accident caused by a drunken driver, Orlando drunk driving accident attorney James O. Cunningham may be able to help. Since 1977, he has helped victims receive the compensation they deserve.

A recent article published in the East Volusia news discusses how the family of local businessman, motorcycle rider and charity organizer, Bruce Rossmeyer, is carrying on the family tradition of leading a charity motorcycle ride. The family said that the late Bruce Rossmeyer was especially enthusiastic about this year’s huge motorcycle ride to raise money for the children’s healthcare facility, Camp Boggy Creek. Rossmeyer’s family said that part of his enthusiasm stemmed from that fact that this year’s ride would be the 15th Annual Ride for Children. They said another reason Rossmeyer looked forward to this year’s ride was that the benefit was nearing the $4 million mark in money raised for the facility since the event began in 1994.

Camp Boggy Creek is a healthcare facility where children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses receive treatment, live and play games with other sick children at no cost to their families. This year’s Ride for Children is also the first charity ride without Mr. Rossmeyer leading the procession. He died in a motorcycle accident on July 30, 2009, in Wyoming while traveling to the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D. Mr. Rossmeyer’s son and four daughters took their father’s place at the front of the parade.

“This year is going to be a little bit different because my dad has always led it,” Will Rossmeyer, vice president of Daytona Harley-Davidson, said in a recent phone interview.

“This was a place they would come and be kids,” Will Rossmeyer said about Camp Boggy Creek. “They didn’t have to worry about someone saying something about them or making fun of them. And, I think that was where my dad fit in because he was the biggest kid of all. These kids would come up and hug him and tears would come out of his eyes.”

His father would say that the camp brings joy to children who have been less fortunate in life. “He used to always tell my sisters and I: ‘You all are all right. You have your fingers, your toes. You have a roof over your head. These kids are sick. And you don’t know how long they are going to be with us,’” Will Rossmeyer said.

Mr. Rossmeyer was among the 11 people who founded the camp and contributed at least $1 million each to the $23 million facility that opened in 1996.

Motorcycle accidents like the one that took Mr. Rossmeyer from his community occur on a daily basis in Central Florida, especially each October during the Biketoberfest event. Many times, inattentive drivers who cross into the path of a rider cause Florida motorcycle accidents. If you or a member of your family has been injured or killed in a motorcycle accident, Orlando motorcycle accident attorney James O. Cunningham may be able to help you and your family obtain compensation to help pay for medical bills, lost wages and other accident-related costs. Call Orlando motorcycle accident lawyer James O. Cunningham today and schedule your free consultation.

A 45-year-old Jupiter man was killed recently in an early morning motorcycle accident after a pickup truck pulled out in front of him. As reported in the Sun-Sentinel, the accident happened before dawn on Indiantown Road just west of Interstate 95 near Taylor Road. The FHP spokesperson, Lt. Frith, said that the victim was wearing a helmet and protective lenses when he was killed. One eastbound lane of Indiantown Road was closed for two hours after the motorcycle accident occurred.

Emergency response personnel say that the victim was eastbound on Indiantown Road about 6:20 a.m. when a 53-year-old pickup truck driver pulled his truck out of the Sierra Square Shopping Center and drove into the path of the oncoming motorcycle.

Lt. Frith said, “For years, this guy [the driver of the pickup] has had a routine—he works at Pratt Whitney and stops there for a cup of coffee.” However, when the driver pulled out of the parking lot this time, he looked through the motorcycle and pulled right out in front of him,” he said.

Having no time to react, the motorcycle rider hit the door of the truck.

Lt. Frith also said, “For some reason, especially when the motorcycles are close, people look over them and through them. We suggest riders wear a reflective vest…or something.”

Only California and Texas have more deaths caused by motorcycle accidents each year than Florida. Although the victim killed in the motorcycle accident was wearing a helmet, the State of Florida does not require motorcycle riders over the age of 20 to wear a helmet while riding. Florida’s agreeable climate for motorcycle riding coupled with higher gas prices has inspired more people to save money by riding a motorcycle. However, the rising number of riders means more motorcyclists will be injured and killed by negligent drivers.

If a motorcyclist is injured or killed due to the negligence of another motorcyclist or driver, he or she may be able to recover financial compensation from the negligent party or the negligent party’s insurance carrier to pay medical bills, reimburse lost wages and for pain and suffering. Orlando motorcycle accident attorney James Cunningham has been helping accident victims receive just compensation since 1977.

Central Florida News reported that a hit-and-run accident on September 6 sent a woman to the hospital with critical injuries, and the woman’s family is pleading with the public for help in finding the driver who fled the scene. According to law enforcement officials investigating the accident, the head-on accident occurred before 3 a.m. and witnesses were unable to provide a positive description of the vehicle involved.

The 35-year-old Orlando victim was reportedly riding her motorcycle on West Colonial Drive near the intersection of Emeralda Drive when a car hit her head-on, resulting in the woman suffering critical injuries. She was treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center and was reportedly alert and talking to family and friends. The Orlando hit-and-run accident victim told family members that the impact sent her flying into the car’s windshield. She said that the car’s driver then reached through the broken glass, pushed her off the hood and then fled the scene of the accident.

The hit-and-run accident victim’s family is hoping that someone who sees or knows someone with a car that has considerable front end damage will come forward with information that will lead to the driver’s arrest. A member of the victim’s family said, “If you have any information, if you could just call the police, advise them of what you know because, you know, this is our sister and, of course, we love her. It could be anyone’s mother, brother, sister, father, uncle. So you got to think what if it had been your family member. You know, we deserve to know or, you know, someone to come forward and admit they made a mistake.”

The accident victim’s family released a photo to the press that shows the victim with a broken nose, arm and wrist. The victim suffered a fractured pelvis and injuries to her left knee.

The driver who caused this Orlando hit-and-run accident may have temporarily evaded his responsibilities, but eventually the police will find out who he is and charge him with the most egregious kind of negligence. An Orlando hit-and-run accident lawyer such as James Cunningham could also help the accident victim receive the financial compensation she deserves to help with the expenses of recovery by pursuing a claim against the responsible party’s insurance carrier. Florida hit-and-run accident attorney James Cunningham offers free consultations and his clients pay no attorney fees unless he makes a financial recovery on their behalf. Call The Law Offices of James O. Cunningham today to schedule a free consultation.
