A local man who often works as an emcee at clubs and parties is facing charges in Osceola County for reporting a fake robbery to police in order to cover up his involvement with a hit-and-run accident. Sheriff’s deputies report that they were called recently to interview a man at Osceola Regional Medical Center who claimed he had been assaulted and robbed the night before. The man told the deputies that he had been working as an emcee at a party on Kimberlee Lane in Kissimmee the previous evening when he drank too much and passed out.

He told deputies that he awoke some time later to discover that people were “messing with his car” in front of the house. When he went out to confront several men damaging his car, he claimed that they attacked him, causing him to lose consciousness again. While interviewing the man, deputies noticed that one of his teeth was chipped and his left eye was swollen and cut. However, the alleged victim was unable to describe any of his attackers and told police that they had taken his wallet but not his iPhone. Upon further investigation, deputies found that the man’s car had been involved in a hit-and-run accident around 1:20 a.m. that morning.

Their investigation found that the man had been driving his car when the accident occurred and had fled from the scene on foot. They believe that alcohol was a factor in the accident and the man now faces numerous charges for his role in the accident, filing a false police report and other charges. The condition, age, location or any other information about the person the suspect struck with his car has not been released while the investigation continues.

It is not uncommon for drivers who cause hit-and-run accidents to fabricate a story to try to cover up their role and attempt to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham has seen this happen many times over the years and has won many cases against these negligent individuals. If you have been injured in an accident caused by a driver who fled the scene, you have a right to seek damages against that person to defray the costs of medical care, lost time at work and other costs.

The nwfDailyNews reports that a 60-year-old Navarre man died from injuries he received when his car was struck by an airborne pickup truck. The Florida auto accident occurred on U.S. Highway 98 close to the intersection with South Circle Westbound.

Police say that witnesses reported that the pickup , driven by a 21-year-old Gulf Breeze man, was driving a Dodge pickup faster than the posted speed limit as he came up behind them and passed them on the inside lane. They said that he lost control of the vehicle while trying to change lanes. After he lost control of his truck and struck the median, witnesses said that the truck went airborne and struck the left front of the victim’s 1998 Saturn, causing one of the vehicles to rotate and collide with the other vehicle again. FHP officials said that the accident appeared to be alcohol-related.

People who choose to drink alcohol and drive know very well that their behavior is tremendously irresponsible and reckless and puts the lives of innocent people at risk. They consciously make a choice to be irresponsible and knowingly exhibit the most negligent kind of behavior that often ends in tragedy. Despite tougher criminal penalties, public service campaigns about the dangers of drinking and driving and the many dangers of driving drunk, people still drink and get behind the wheel thinking that drunken driving accidents happen to other people. That is, until they cause a drunk driving auto accident that kills or severely injures someone.

A man accused of hitting and killing a motorcyclist while driving drunk has entered a not guilty plea to DUI manslaughter charges. This article in the Sun Sentinel reports that the man has a long history of negligent behavior behind the wheel, including a hit-and-run accident, drunk driving convictions, high-speed police chases and many traffic citations. By the time the 31-year-old man was arrested in Miramar in September 2009 and charged with killing a motorcyclist while driving under influence of alcohol, there was a warrant for his arrest in connection with two DUI cases in Maryland.

The September 8, 2009, drunk driving accident resulted in two counts of DUI manslaughter, two counts of DUI property damage and one count of child neglect against the Miramar man. The man was reportedly driving his fiancé’s nine-year-old daughter to school that morning on Pembroke Road when he struck and killed a 43-year-old Davie man. According to arrest records released by Maryland prosecutors, it wasn’t the man’s first arrest for causing an accident while driving drunk.

The records indicated that a sheriff’s deputy in Maryland attempted to pull the man over for speeding in April 2004, but the man refused to comply and a chase ensued at speeds up to 100 mph. The deputy reported that the man had two passengers in the car when he crashed into the back of a pickup truck and kept going during the chase. He then turned onto the street where he lived and jumped out of the vehicle while it was still in gear. When the deputy apprehended the man, a breath test showed that his blood-alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit.

On July 3, 2006, the man led Maryland State Police on another chase in a reportedly stolen car. The man stopped the car at a dead end and attempted to get out when he was arrested. The man smelled of alcohol, had glassy eyes and slurred speech, and again, his BAC was nearly triple the legal limit. A warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for a probation violation and the man later moved to Florida. He was issued a Florida driver’s license two weeks before authorities suspended his Maryland driver’s license.

In 2007, drunk drivers killed 1111 people on Florida roadways and thousands more suffered injuries that required hospitalization. Florida ranks third in the country behind California and Texas, respectively, in people killed every year by drunk drivers. If you or a member of your family has been injured or killed by a drunk driver, call Orlando drunk driving accident attorney James O. Cunningham today to schedule a free consultation.
