On the night of Wednesday, June 20th, two men were riding motorcycles along the northbound lanes of Minton Road when they approached the intersection of this road and Hield Road. According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the two motorcyclists were riding at a normal speed at close to 10:00 in the evening. One of the riders was a 33-year-old (driving a 2008 Kawasaki), and the other was 24 (driving a 2003 Suzuki). Both were Palm Bay residents.
At the same time as they neared the intersection, a 2015 SUV being driven by a 36-year-old Melbourne resident neared the area. This car was traveling down the southern lanes of Minton Road, and as the vehicle neared Hield Road the driver began to make preparations to turn across the northbound lanes and enter the cross street.
For reasons that are not clear, the 36-year-old motorist did not see either of the motorcycles. As they initiated their left-hand turn, they pulled directly into the path of both the bikes, creating a situation that was nearly impossible to remedy. Neither of the motorcyclists were able to avoid the car that was suddenly before them.
The reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that the 24-year-old on the Suzuki was riding in front of the other motorcycle and thus struck the SUV first. The Suzuki and its rider struck the right side of the large car, and almost immediately afterwards the second motorcycle, the Kawasaki, collided with both the first motorcycle and the car.
The force of the collision caused all three of the individuals involved to suffer from injuries. Emergency response teams that rushed to the area following the crash were able to extricate the SUV’s driver from their vehicle and they and the rider of the Kawasaki were both taken from the scene to Holmes Regional Medical Center for treatment. The rider of the Suzuki, a person who received the brunt of the impact and was also pinned between the second motorcycle and the car, suffered from fatal injuries as a result of the collision, and paramedics declared him dead at the scene of the crash.
The collision is still under investigation, and it is not clear if any charges are pending against the driver of the SUV.
