At approximately 6 p.m this past Monday evening in Titusville, a family of four visiting Florida from the United Kingdom were fatally injured when the rental car they were driving caused a U-turn accident with an oncoming pickup truck.
It was the tail end of rush hour after a busy Easter weekend in Brevard County when this car accident occurred. Authorities believe that the family, all from Bristol, England, were returning from the historic SpaceX launch at the Kennedy Space Center, en route via State Road 405 to their rental home just under two hours away in Davenport, Florida. Their white Mitsubishi sedan was travelling westbound, and as it attempted to make a left turn onto Sisson Road, it was slammed into by a black Ford F-250 driven by a male, 28, of Port St. John.
Upon further investigation into the crash, it was discovered by Titusville PD that the GPS system enabled in the rental car had recalibrated the family’s route in order to avoid an upcoming fender-bender on the highway ahead, prompting the driver to make the U-turn, which ultimately caused the deadly collision with the truck. The impact of this horrific accident was so forceful that the Jaws of Life had to be utilized in the extraction of the victims from their vehicle.
“We think that one of the contributing factors was the unfamiliarity of the driver with the area,” said Todd Hutchinson, deputy chief of the Titusville Police Department. “The vehicle they collided with was a heavy duty Ford pickup truck driven by a local man who said that the vehicle pulled right in front of him and there was nothing he could do.”
