Residents and drivers going through the city of Edgewater are calling for the city to do something in order to remedy an increasingly dangerous situation caused by standing water along a specific stretch of roadway.  The current furor was caused after a new homeowner in the area reported a car crash in an space beside his home early on Tuesday morning. According to this resident, his property sits near a stretch of the roadway that is particularly low lying.  Beside the road is a guardrail, and the resident in question credits this guardrail for preventing the car from bursting through the bedroom wall of his 4-year-old son.

The driver of the truck told the homeowner and the Edgewater Police that he was driving down the road when he neared the curve where the guardrail is present.  The driver said that he then began to press the breaks, but that nothing happened.  The problem was that the truck had hit a patch of standing water and as soon as he tried to use his breaks the car began to hydroplane.  It was at this time that the truck crashed through the guardrail and into the homeowner’s lawn.  As frightening as the situation is on its own, neighbors to the new Edgewater resident told him that this is far from the first time such a thing has taken place.

Residents state the the whole neighborhood has a drainage problem, and that there is a large amount of standing water located near the roadway.  After heavy rains, this standing water rises to reach the roadway itself, and after a very short amount of time the water will, in fact, cover the road.

While the members of Edgewater’s city council have been notified of the dangerous situation, reports from the citizens indicate that the city has declined to take these complaints very seriously.  Instead, in their review, the city stated that the two times that cars have crashed along the specified stretch of road were both due to an issue with the driver of the vehicle, and that the roadway, wet as it occasionally might be, was in no way to blame.

It is not clear if any further investigation was launched by the city, or if any measures will be taken to fix what residents describe as a persistent problem.
