A deputy working with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a severe car accident on Sunday, October 14th. The deputy was inside of a patrol vehicle and traveling down Southeast 38th Street inside of Marion County when the incident happened. Official reports provide most of the information relating to the crash; however, because the crash involved a police officer it is likely going to be some time before the full details relating to the incident are released to the public.
What we know so far is that the deputy in question was a 29-year-old individual. The report did not state how long this person had been working with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The report also failed to state at what time the incident occurred, although we do know that it was at some point during the early morning hours of the day in question.
The deputy was headed down the northern lane of Southeast 38th Street inside of a clearly marked 2015 Ford Explorer police car. Reports state that the deputy was responding to an emergency call while he was headed down this road. We do not know what the nature of this call was and it is not clear whether or not the initial incident was responded to by other officers.
Because he was responding to a call, it is likely that the deputy was traveling at a high rate of speed. This made the car even more difficult to control when its front right tires departed from the roadway. It is not clear what happened to cause the deputy to allow the tires to leave the asphalt, but as soon as they did so all of the traction which they had been able to maintain on the asphalt vanished and the deputy was plunged further into a state of non-control over his vehicle.
The patrol car then collided with a mailbox as well as a utility box and a utility pole. Upon striking the pole, the car spun in a circle and overturned once before landing back on the tires.
The deputy was injured in the incident, although the full extent of his injuries is not clear. He was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center for treatment.
